Sex Toy Materials

Sex Toy Materials
In the world of sex toys you’ll find a whole slew of materials out there that your vibrator or dildo may be made from. This results in a tons of products on the marketplace that are designed to put in intimate contact with either your vagina, anus, or mouth, with no regard for the consumers health in mind. At Trinity Romance Shop we do our best to carry strictly phthalate-free sex toys, and inform our customers as much as possible on any and all buying decisions.
Below is a list of the materials we carry, the ones we don’t, and why. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to drop us a line.
Body Safe Sex Toy Materials
Silicone- This is by far our favourite material for sex toys. It’s non-porous, hypoallergenic, and retains body heat very well. Since there aren't any pores bacteria can't easily find a home, and lubes will go farther as well because they’re not getting absorbed into the toys material. Consumers need to be wary of some brands latching on to the silicone bandwagon and touting their toys as silicone, when in fact they are usually silicone blends. As to what they’re blended with your guess is probably as good as ours. For that reason we recommend staying with reliable brands like Funfactory, Lelo, and Tantus.
Elastomer- The only good type of jelly available on the market is a patented hypoallergenic elastomer. It can be found on some FunFactory and Vibratex toys. This material is less likely to break down over time, is crack and tear resistant, and stays strong under lots of vibrational stress. It is also non-toxic, soft, and flexible. Unlike silicone it can’t be boiled, and is best cleaned with warm water and antibacterial soap, or a toy cleaner. Always remember to rinse well as some soap may leave a slight film, which can be an irritant to some.
Anodized Aluminum- We like to think of this material as a luxurious safe alternative to glass. It transmits heat and cold in much the same way, it’s non porous, and it’s artistically shaped. All of that without worrying if it may break or scratch makes it the perfect substitute.
Plastic-Plastic sex toys are hard in texture and do not bend. Temperature is typically cool and does not change, or hold temperature. Plastic vibrators can be a bit noisy, and are usually better used for external use. That said there are some designs that make good penetraters too like the Natural Contours line of vibrators. To clean use a paper towel and rubbing alcohol. Soap and water can also be used, however some soap can leave a film and their chemicals can break down materials faster. Plastic sex toys will last a long time if handled properly.
Scary Sex Toy Materials
Jelly Rubber- Trinity Romance Shop does not carry jelly toys due to the fact that they off gas phthalate’s. With phthalate studies showing two hours of continuous exposure resulting in excessive toxicity, we question why is a manufacturer even making a penetrative jelly toy? Parts of Europe, and North America have either banned these compounds in certain products (baby toys, pet toys) or clearly labeled. However, health regulators have turned a blind eye to the obvious risk of phthalate exposure through adult oral, vaginal and anal contact. Jelly is very porous and cannot be sterilized, and should be used only with a condom. Some other downsides are that it doesn’t feel very real, requires lubricant due to its porous nature. If you do end up with a jelly toy or already have one in your collection, and still don’t want to throw it out clean by using warm water only. A mild soap can be used but soaps tend to break down jelly materials so toys won’t last very long.
Latex Rubber- Trinity Romance Shop does not carry latex toys, due to the fact that they are usually of very poor quality, and the material itself breaks down very quickly. Rubber including latex rubber is commonly used for sex toys. It’s very porous, and does not clean very well. We recommend that a condom be used for each use, as the product will last longer. Other issues you’ll find with latex are that many people have allergies to it that will the irritate skin. Latex rubber is very porous so it is difficult to clean/sterilize. It can be washed with soap and water or with an anti-bacterial cleaner, however soaps can leave a film, so be sure to rinse thoroughly.
Glass- Trinity Romance Shop does not carry glass, due to its unpredictable nature, and fear of disaster. If using glass ensure it’s a medical-grade ‘hard glass’. The material will hold temperature well, and it can be run under water to adjust temperature before use. It will also withstand extreme temperature and shock, and can be boiled in water or put in the dishwasher to sterilize. We choose not to carry it because it can be scratched and will break if hit with enough force. After talking to some glass blowers Trinity Romance Shop has come to learn that glass is somewhat unpredictable in nature. The same piece that could be handled repeatedly, could scratch or break and sometimes without warning. It’s fear of the one in a few that Trinity Romance Shop takes into account when it comes to our buying decision, but if handled properly and inspected closely after each use it could last a lifetime.
Cyberskin- Trinity Romance Shop does not carry Cyberskin, due to the facts that it releases phthalates, attracts dirt quickly, and is virtually impossible to clean. You’ll sometimes find it sold with a cleaner that is overpriced 100% talc. Talc has been directly linked to be a cause of cervical cancer, so why it’s being used as sex toy cleaner is anybody’s guess. The material does feel very lifelike, but is very porous. As a result it is difficult to clean, collects dirt and germs and holds onto them, while tearing easily.
